Non-Latex Condom Buying Guide

While the majority of condoms are made from a natural rubber latex, condoms also come in a variety of other materials.Called non-latex condoms, these condoms are free of natural latex proteins and are made from polyisoprene, polyurethane, nitrile or lamb membrane.

While they’re ideal for those with allergies and/or sensitivities to proteins, non-latex condoms are also loved by those who like to experiment with other safer sex options. Unless otherwise noted below, they are used and stored just like regular latex condoms.

Read more about the difference between non-latex and latex-free labels in, “New FDA Regulations for “Latex-Free” Labeling.”

The first thing people notice when they first switch from latex to non-latex condoms is a huge improvement in sensation, heat transfer and sensitivity between partners. Non-latex condom users also express a love for their neutral taste and scent, which makes sex seem more natural to all of the senses.

There aren’t any flavored and/or colored non-latex dental dams or condoms on the US market as of yet, but a flavored lube like Swiss Navy Chocolate Bliss can turn any of these male non-latex condoms into a flavored non-latex condom– perfectly suited for safer oral sex.

Speaking of personal lubricants, other people prefer to use condoms with oil-based lubes, but since this will destroy a latex condom, they buy non-latex condoms to use with their oil. However, beware that the labeling for Trojan BareSkin Non-Latex Supra condoms specifies to NOT ADD any kind of additional lube to this particular condom.

And, since we are in the warning portion of this non-latex condom buying guide, be very cautious when using Trojan NaturaLamb condoms. Unlike all other male and female, latex and non-latex condoms approved by the FDA and sold at Condoms Fast, this condom is made from a porous material (not vegan-friendly). While lambskin condoms prevent unwanted pregnancies, they allow for the back-and-forth passage of STIs and STDs, therefore they offer NO PROTECTION from transmission.
